Limited Production Certification

Hands wiring components – Limited Production Certification is ideal for products that are not manufactured in series

Table of Contents

If products are not intended for mass production, Limited Production Certification is the ideal way to bring flexible, customized products to the international market.

Relation to UL

A Limited Production Certification offers you maximum assurance when exporting your equipment to the U.S. or Canada. The certification process by Underwriters Laboratories takes place in Germany and is confirmed with the corresponding UL certification mark.

What is the Limited Production Certification?

The Limited Production Certification (LPC) is a certification for products manufactured in limited quantities or as one-of-a-kind items, particularly custom-made, specialized, or prototype products.

What is meant by “Limited Production Certification”?

LPC is a certification process designed for products manufactured in limited quantities or as one-of-a-kind items. Accordingly, this certification is particularly relevant for custom-made, specialized, or prototype products. Once the product has been successfully certified and the corresponding label has been affixed, it can be exported to the North American market. The Limited Production Certification is therefore an efficient solution for manufacturers who wish to bring their products to market while complying with recognized safety and quality standards.

When is a Limited Production Certification a good idea?

Products that are particularly suitable for Limited Production Certification (LPC) include industrial machinery, control cabinets, and ready-to-operate individual systems—such as handling systems or hydraulic units—that are manufactured as single units or in small batches. In this context, they must not exceed a maximum annual production volume of several hundred units and a maximum production duration of ninety days.

Register in Germany; export to the U.S. and Canada

A Limited Production Certification is a certification based on internationally recognized industry standards. This makes it possible to export LPC-labeled products to North America without any problems. This certification is particularly important for the industrial machinery, wind turbine, and control cabinet industries—areas where specialized solutions are often required to meet specific needs. It simplifies the export process and market entry and is typically issued by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or CSA (Canadian Standards Association).

LPC (Limited Production Certification) is an internationally recognized industry standard.

What are the requirements for the LPC?

To obtain a Limited Production Certification (LPC), certain requirements must be met to ensure that the product complies with the necessary standards and safety requirements.

First, the product must comply with an accredited NRTL standard, such as UL 508A or CSA C22.2 No. 14. This means that the product’s design and construction must meet the specific requirements of these standards. The LPC is also suitable for cases in which a significant modification is made to an already listed product.

To verify compliance with the standards, the device must be in an operational and functional condition so that performance and functional tests can be conducted. For products manufactured in small batches, all units in the batch must also be identical.
However, it should be noted that the Limited Production Certification does not apply if no published standard or draft standard exists for the product in question.

Limited Production Certification Process

The specific requirements and processes for granting a Limited Production Certification (LPC) vary depending on the certifying body; that is, organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the United States or TÜV in Germany each have their own criteria and procedures. However, they all share the common goal of ensuring safety and quality.

The product’s compliance is confirmed

Typically, the LPC process involves a thorough analysis of the product design, a review of the materials and components used, as well as tests and inspections conducted either at the manufacturer’s facility or in a testing laboratory. The process verifies compliance with safety standards, performance criteria, and specific industry standards. Upon successful completion of the testing and certification process, a corresponding certificate or label is issued, confirming the product’s conformity with the relevant standards.

The Limited Production Certification guarantees compliance with the standards

This process ensures that even products manufactured in limited quantities meet the required safety and quality standards, thereby facilitating access to international markets: Once certification is granted, the product can be sold throughout the United States and Canada. Finally, local testing agencies conduct on-site inspections of the assembly and electrical connections.

Benefits of Limited Production Certification

Because the certification process is already carried out in Germany by recognized NRTLs such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or CSA (Canadian Standards Association) and is confirmed with a special certification mark, you receive confirmation of compliance with all necessary standards even before export. A Limited Production Certification therefore offers maximum assurance when exporting a machine or system.

Fewer problems and easier communication

This not only helps avoid problems during inspections or in insurance claims, but also has the advantage that the responsible inspection body on-site handles the clarification of all outstanding issues with the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). In addition, the Limited Production Certification ensures that the entire system is treated as a single component in North America, which greatly simplifies its integration and deployment on-site.

More flexibility, less time and lower costs

Furthermore, the LPC remains valid even if the facility is relocated, ensuring flexibility and continuity. In practice, this means that if a facility with LPC certification is moved to another location in North America, the certification it has already obtained remains valid. This simplifies the transfer and commissioning of the system at different locations without requiring additional certification steps or local inspections. This can save time and money and increase flexibility for manufacturers who may need to deliver or relocate their systems to different locations.

Zusammenfassung

Limited Production Certification (LPC) is a certification for custom-made or small-batch products intended for the international market. This certification ensures that these products comply with accredited safety and quality standards, thereby facilitating market entry. Through cooperation with recognized testing organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the Limited Production Certification provides a solid foundation for this.
