AGV and AMP - what are they exactly?
In many areas such as production and logistics, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and automated guided vehicle systems (AGVS) play a decisive role in the automation of manufacturing processes and material transport.
UL 3100 defines comprehensive safety and quality requirements for automated mobile platforms (AMP for short). As part of AGVs and mobile robotics, these AMPs are becoming an increasingly important component of industrial infrastructure.
How can Krayer Systemtechnik provide support in the area of UL 3100?
Time and Cost Savings
Our control cabinets and pre-wired mounting plates are already certified according to the UL 508A standard. This eliminates the need for re-testing these components for your systems. You save time in the development process and can concentrate on optimizing your AGVs.

What exactly is UL 3100?
ANSI/CAN/UL 3100 is a US standard for the development of battery-powered mobile platforms (AMPs) in industrial environments used for demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, and picking up products. It was published in May 2021 and helps manufacturers design innovative technologies safely and in compliance with standards.
Which AGVs does UL 3100 apply to?
UL 3100 applies to battery-powered, mobile platforms in industry. It is not applicable to devices such as floor cleaning machines or lifting systems with forks. The minimum requirements of the standard concern indoor areas with temperatures from 0 to 40°C and outdoor areas with temperatures from -30 to 40°C.
Which requirements does UL 3100 regulate?
UL 3100 regulates a variety of requirements for the safe operation of automated mobile platforms. These range from technical and functional requirements to tests and warnings, which are described in detail below.
Technical requirements of UL 3100
Batteries and chargers
Lithium-ion batteries
Must comply with at least one of the standards UL/ULC 2580, UL/ULC 2271, UL 62133-2 and CSA C22.2 No. 62133-2 or IEC 62619.
Lead-acid batteries
Must be insulated and comply with UL 1989 to minimize risks such as short circuits and overheating. Additional safety measures must, for example, prevent the occurrence of electric arcs.
Chargers
Must be certified according to approved standards such as UL 1310, UL 60950-1, or UL 62368-1 and include protective measures against overcharging and short circuits.
In addition to requirements for batteries and chargers, UL 3100 also regulates requirements for lasers, lamps, horns, alarms, and indicators, for example.
Proof of Compliance with UL 2011
Batteries and chargers
Enclosures of automated mobile platforms must be flame-retardant and comply with the specified requirements for permissible openings. At the same time, internal wiring must be designed to meet the specified temperature and operating requirements to ensure long-term reliability.
Payload
Enclosures of automated mobile platforms must be flame-retardant and comply with the specified requirements for permissible openings. At the same time, internal wiring must be designed to meet the specified temperature and operating requirements to ensure long-term reliability.
Functional requirements according to UL 3100
Object detection and avoidance
AGVs must be able to detect obstacles and avoid collisions. Conditions for muting detection and impairments due to environmental influences are regulated.
Risk assessment and functional safety
To minimize risks such as fire, electric shock, or injury, UL 3100 requires a comprehensive risk assessment. In doing so, UL 3100 presupposes the requirements for functional safety according to international standards such as UL 991, UL 1998, CSA C22.2 No. 0.8, IEC 61508 (all parts), ISO 13849-1 and -2, as well as IEC 62061.
Braking and stability
According to UL 3100, the system must be equipped with a brake that not only stops movement reliably but also meets functional requirements, particularly regarding the effects of the braking process on the stability of the system.
Overcoming gradients
AMPs must be able to overcome a gradient of at least 3%. Limitations or higher performance capabilities must be marked accordingly.
Tests and warnings
UL 3100 requires comprehensive testing such as rated power, temperature, and stress tests, overload and vibration tests, as well as tests for abnormal operating conditions. Requirements for detailed warnings and markings are also specified.
