UL 698A standard defines the requirements for control panels with intrinsically safe circuit extensions
for Class I, II, and III, Zones 1 and 2
for Class I, Zone 0, 1, and 2
for hazardous locations according to Articles 500, 504, and 505 of the NEC, NFPA 70.
To create or extend an intrinsically safe circuit, UL-listed barriers must be used in control panels connected to hazardous EX areas. Additionally, control drawings of the control panels are required to ensure proper connections on-site.

Certification according to UL 698A with the UL label
The strict UL 698A standard that a control panel must meet in Ex i applications to be certified with the UL label is our area of expertise. Control panels that comply with UL 698A are approved for installation in Ordinary Locations (OrdLoc)—that is, in all environments except hazardous (explosive) areas—in both the USA and Canada. This approval is granted under the National Electrical Code (NEC/NFPA 70) and the Canadian Electrical Code, as UL is a laboratory recognized by OSHA.
