Our Services as a UL 1203 Specialist

UL 1203 defines the safety requirements for control cabinets used in hazardous locations (HazLoc) in accordance with Articles 500–505 of the NEC (NFPA 70). This applies to control cabinets installed in:

Classes I, II, and III, Divisions 1 and 2

Class I, Zone 0, 1, and 2

Groups II A, II B, and II C.

It includes technical requirements necessary for electrical equipment to be labeled as “explosion-proof” and “dust-ignition-proof.”

The control panels must be designed in such a way that the formation of arcing components is prevented and that they can withstand elevated temperatures Under no circumstances may an ignition source be created or enter the hazardous (Ex) area. The design follows one of the NEC-approved protection methods for electrical equipment in hazardous (classified) locations.

As experts in UL certification for control panels, we have in-depth knowledge of the HazLoc requirements for the USA and Canada. Our control panels meet those strict standards, and we are authorized by Underwriter Laboratories to certify them with the UL label ourselves. Only with this label those control panels can they be operated in the USA and Canada.

The Benefits of UL 1203 Certification for Hazardous Locations (EX Areas)

Control panels used in hazardous (Ex) areas do need to meet specific UL standards in the USA and Canada, namely “Industrial Control Panels for Use in Hazardous Locations, NNNY.”

As a recognized expert, KRAYER is both qualified and certified to build UL-compliant control panels for Ex areas under the NNNY category. All control systems and panels we manufacture in accordance with UL 1203 receive an official UL label. This offers you several key advantages:

The UL standards for control panels in hazardous locations include:

UL 121201 NONINCENDIVE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT FOR USE IN CLASS I AND II, DIVISION 2, AND CLASS III, DIVISIONS 1 AND 2 HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS

NFPA 496 PURGED AND PRESSURIZED ENCLOSURES FOR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

UL 1203 FOR EXPLOSION-PROOF AND DUST-IGNITION-PROOF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT FOR USE IN HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS

KRAYER’s Industry Expertise in the HazLoc Sector

Since 1989, we have been developing, designing, and building control cabinets in Spraitbach near Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany for use in North America. In spring 2020, we underwent what is arguably the most demanding and stringent UL certification in the field of control cabinets: certification for hazardous locations (HazLoc). Since then, we have been authorized to manufacture and certify control cabinets in accordance with UL 698A and UL 1203. These control cabinets are used in explosion-hazard environments or in areas that are connected to hazardous locations.

Our customers come from a wide range of industries and have very different requirements for their control panels in hazardous locations. However, with over 30 years of experience in UL control panel manufacturing, we know exactly what matters. That’s why we implement your specifications and expectations with precision—regardless of your industry or whether the control panel will ultimately be installed in an Ex or Ex i area.
