CSA Group and the Path to CSA Certification<\/h2>\n\n
The CSA Group<\/strong> (formerly the Canadian Standards Association<\/em>) was founded in 1919 as the Canadian Engineering Standards Association<\/em> (CESA), because the lack of uniform industry standards had proven problematic during World War I when products from different manufacturers were to be used together. From the very beginning, the Canadian government entrustedCESA\/CSA<\/a> with the development of uniform standards<\/strong> for Canadian industry. A well-known example is the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), which was first published in 1927. <\/p>\n\n <\/div> It wasn\u2019t long before there was a desire to make it easier for customers to recognize whether a product complied with the relevant CSA standard. This marked the birth of CSA certification<\/strong>. However, it would not be until the 1970s that CSA certification became part of everyday life for Canadian consumers. Prior to that time, consumer goods were not subject to CSA certification. <\/p>\n\n Today, the CSA Group tests and certifies products across a wide range of sectors<\/strong>, from gardening tools and sports equipment to lighting fixtures, telecommunications technology, and control panels for potentially explosive atmospheres. According to a survey commissioned by CSA itself, nearly 70% of all Canadian customers<\/strong> now value compliance with CSA standards or prefer to purchase products bearing the CSA label. <\/p>\n\n In the U.S., there is no organization comparable to the CSA Group that acts as an intermediary between government agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration<\/em> (OSHA<\/a>) and private organizations. Instead, there are a number of Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories<\/em> (NRTLs). These are government-recognized, private testing laboratories<\/strong> that test products for compliance with their own in-house standards. However, these in-house standards must be based on relevant U.S. laws<\/strong> in order for a testing laboratory to receive government recognition. <\/p>\n\n The CSA Group holds this government recognition<\/strong> as an NRTL and, like UL<\/a> and other laboratories, is authorized to test products for safety and issue its own mark of approval as evidence of CSA certification. However, since the NRTLs\u2019 certification marks are issued by private companies or organizations, they do not<\/strong> have official status<\/strong>.
