In addition to Underwriters Laboratories (UL), there are a number of other government-recognized organizations that test products for the North American market and certify their safety with their own labels. Canada has its own organization, the CSA Group. But is it better to rely on CSA certification<\/strong> rather than on UL\u2019s services? <\/p>\n\n

Relation to UL<\/h2>\n\n

CSA or cUL certification is required when a control cabinet or system is shipped to Canada. There are a few differences to keep in mind, particularly regarding documentation. <\/p>\n\n

The Story Behind CSA Certification<\/h2>\n\n

CSA is slightly younger than UL. The organization was founded in 1919 as the Canadian Engineering Standards Association<\/strong>, after the importance of uniform standards for industry had been recognized. CSA\u2019s original mission was therefore standards development<\/strong>; product certification was added later. Today, all business divisions and areas of responsibility are united under the umbrella brand CSA Group<\/strong>. The range of testing services <\/strong>now extends <\/strong>from household appliances and consumer electronics to medical devices and industrial manufacturing equipment. <\/p>\n\n

Why the CSA Does Not Approve Products<\/h3>\n\n

The organization includes representatives from Canadian government agencies<\/strong> as well as from businesses and consumer protection organizations. Unlike UL, the CSA Group is therefore not, in practice, a purely private-sector company, but rather a semi-governmental organization<\/strong>. Compliance with the standards developed by the CSA is\u2014much like our DIN standards\u2014 generally voluntary<\/strong>, unless otherwise required by law. In this respect, it is also incorrect to say that a product has CSA approval<\/em>. The CSA Group does not \u201capprove\u201d products. <\/p>\n\n
